The KiDS in Dire Straits Foundation helps children in Indonesia who are facing hardship. We want to ensure they can grow up safely, attend school, and dream of a bright future. Our foundation grew out of the unique history shared by the Netherlands and Indonesia. Many children from that era went unnoticed and had few opportunities; their stories have often been forgotten. Even today, many children in Indonesia are growing up in poverty or without a safe place to live. That is why we want to be there for them. In partnership with schools, orphanages, and local organizations in Indonesia, we provide children with education, care, and other essential support. We listen to their stories and show them that every child matters.
We believe that every child deserves love, attention, and a fair chance. Together, we can build a future filled with hope.
A history that connects
Erik Reep’s connection to Indonesia is rooted in his family history. Both his parents were born in Indonesia and grew up under difficult circumstances. Their life story is not unique; it reflects the experiences of many families of Dutch-Indonesian heritage affected by war, separation, and migration.
After repatriating to the Netherlands, they built a new life for themselves, despite everything they had endured. They never lost faith in the power of respect, resilience, and connection. These values remain a key source of inspiration for the work of the KiDS in Dire Straits Foundation.
Against this backdrop, the foundation is dedicated to children in Indonesia who are currently growing up in vulnerable circumstances. Its commitment stems not merely from the past, but above all from the conviction that every child has a right to safety, education, and a future with prospects.
In this way, the KiDS in Dire Straits Foundation bridges the past and the future: mindful of history, yet focused primarily on the children of today.

He was brought in by some relatives who, due to poverty, couldn't properly care for him and thought the orphanage was a good solution. The relatives wanted to try it, but if it didn't work out, they would take him back. Initially, he ate small amounts, was withdrawn, and quiet. His eyes were dull and tearful, and he looked tired. With daily nutritious meals, sufficient rest, and medical checkups, Ardi slowly began to improve. He quickly connected with the other children and was soon surrounded by friends. Within a few weeks, he gained weight, his skin became radiant, he had fewer stomach aches, was calmer, participated in games and played in the group, and laughed a lot when he played with his friends. After about a month, he ran to his caregiver for the first time, laughing.
His caregiver said:
"He's found his place and home and is happy again."
