KIDS in Dire Straits
Building opportunities for children in Indonesia together with local partners

The KiDS in Dire Straits Foundation collaborates with Indonesian schools, care facilities, and social organizations that support children on a daily basis. Together, we contribute to a safe living environment, appropriate care, education, and opportunities for personal development.

Our foundation was born out of a personal connection to Indonesia and an awareness that the shared history of the Netherlands and Indonesia is complex and sometimes painful. We do not wish to simplify that history or use it to speak on behalf of others; instead, we choose to focus on listening, mutual respect, and future-oriented collaboration.

The knowledge, experience, and sense of responsibility of our local partners always serve as our starting point. From the Netherlands, we contribute through financial support, active engagement, knowledge exchange, and by connecting people and organizations.

We believe that every child has the right to dignity, protection, education, and the opportunity to develop their own talents.

A history that connects

Founder Erik Reep’s connection to Indonesia is rooted in his family history. Born in Banjarmasin in 1951, he moved to the Netherlands with his family as a child. Memories of his birthplace and his family’s history remained with him throughout his life.

After returning to Indonesia, a desire arose to connect people and organizations. His late wife’s commitment to vulnerable children also served as a major source of inspiration for the founding of the KiDS in Dire Straits Foundation.

Drawing on this personal background, the foundation builds a bridge between the past and the future—not by imposing answers from the outside, but by collaborating with people and organizations that understand the local context and work on behalf of children every day.

“Ardi (9): A boy who regained his color”

When Ardi arrived at the care facility, he needed rest, proper nutrition, and medical attention. The local caregivers took the time to get to know him and provide a safe, structured daily routine.

Gradually, he gained energy, connected with other children, and began participating in group activities. His development demonstrates the impact that trusted guidance and a stable environment can have.

The local organization continues to work with his family to monitor his needs and determine the best way to support his well-being.
